8/19/2014 Chiwaukum Complex Update

Please visit inciweb for our latest maps at: http://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/maps/3976/

The Chiwaukum Complex will experience cooler temperatures today as a cold front moved in last night causing cloud cover and relative humidity to increase. Winds are expected to escalate throughput the day with possible gusts of 25-35 mph. Torching and more active fire behavior may occur within the fire perimeter.

Firefighters will be monitoring the fires closely. Potential fire behavior and winds forecast for today will test containment efforts and line construction put in place over the last several days. Sufficient firefighting resources remain in place in Leavenworth and Entiat for any flare ups or new fires in the area.

Helicopters will remain at the Fish Lake Air Strip and are available to assist crews if needed.

The Duncan Fire will be monitored by both air and ground forces. Crews will work within the fire perimeter to reduce potential challenges to the fire lines.. Rehabilitation of the Shady Pass Road will continue.

The Hansel Creek Fire may be exposed to high winds on the northwest edge. Crews will patrol the area throughout the day as the weather may create opportunities for increased fire activity.  Firefighters have strengthened the lines and will continue rehab efforts on the north flank of the fire.

The Shoofly Fire contains isolated heat on the interior that may torch single trees capable of causing spot fires. A fire use module (7-10 member crew specializing in fire monitoring) will join with suppression crews to patrol the area and monitor the fire.

A rehabilitation and repair group will begin work on the Alpine Fire today. Crews will develop a rehabilitation plan as needs are assessed.

Today on the Chiwaukum Creek Fire, crews will rehabilitate hiking trails that were used to transport equipment into the fire. The fire will also be monitored and patrolled.

A rehabilitation assessment will also begin on the Mills Canyon Fire today.  Although this fire is 100% contained, there will be equipment and resources in the area for post fire duties.

We would like to remind all public looking to recreate in the fire areas that although there are not large flames and columns of smoke to be seen, burned trees, loosened debris, and fire equipment traffic all pose a threat. Please take these hazards seriously and respect fire closure areas.
