8/19/2014 Somers Fire Update

August 19, 2014 Update – 8 p.m.
Contact Fire Information:  541-432-0119

Joseph, OR – Today's winds from a dry cold front entering the area created challenging conditions for the 308 personnel assigned to the Somers Fire.  The 35,917-acre fire remains 58 percent contained.

The closure to camping on the Oregon side of the Snake River has been lifted.  Due to heavy firefighter traffic along the Hat Point Road, the road remains closed.  The route will be reopened as soon as safely possible, with the goal of opening in advance of bow season.

Today's suppression efforts included completing containment line on the southern portion of the fire.  Approximately six smokes were located in the Thompson Creek area.  Fire crews also focused on securing handlines around the Deep Creek area while helicopters delivered bucket drops to reduce heat and moderate fire behavior.  Some flames were visible in that area.  Rehabilitation of fireline began on the western portion of the fire after work on spot fires was completed.  The eastern portion of the fire was patrolled by air and rehabilitation of fireline was completed near the Pittsburg administrative site.
