9/08/2016 Rail Fire Transitions Back to Local Forests

The management of the Rail Fire, located 5 miles west of Unity, Oregon, will transition back to the Malheur and Wallowa-Whitman National Forests teams on Thursday, September 8, at 6:00 a.m.
Local firefighting crews will continue with mop up and suppression repair efforts on the affected areas. Efforts will include, disposing of slash created by the firefighting efforts, repairing roads and making fireline surfaces less prone to future erosion.
As the immediate suppression and repair work associated with containing the 41,716-acre Rail Fire have reached 90% completion and the fire behavior is minimal, fire updates will not be produced on a daily basis. Any further information will only be updated as there are changes to the affected closure area, and also if there are changes or developments with fire behavior.
An area closure around the Rail Fire remains in effect due to firefighters working, interior heat, weakened trees and damaged roads. Forest Road 16 remains closed south and east of the fire area. Forest Road 2652 is closed between 2640 and Forest Road 13. As fire traffic in the area subsides, hazards are removed and it is deemed safe, affected roads will reopen.
Some smoke will continue to rise from the interior of the Rail Fire area as the day time temperatures warm to 80 degrees this weekend, how much smoke is produced will depend on temperatures, humidity levels and the available amount of interior fuels.
Although the potential for lightning caused wildfires has decreased with the current weather patterns, human caused fires are still a threat, as fuels are receptive for ignition and rapid spread is still possible. Please use caution while out on the Forest. For current regulations and conditions, please contact your local U.S. Forest Service office.
