FLOUNCE FIRE
August 14, 2017 9:00 a.m.

Shady Cove, Oregon – Operations began to ramp down on the Flounce Fire Sunday evening, as firefighters reached 75 percent containment. The fire remains at 690 acres. Operations have transitioned to perimeter patrol and mop up of hotspots. A Type 3 organization will assume command of the fire at noon on Tuesday, August 15. The Type 3 organization will primarily be staffed with personnel from the Oregon Department of Forestry’s Southwest Oregon District. The current Type 1 Incident Management Team will demobilize following the transfer of command.

A favorable change in weather conditions has aided progress on the fire, and conditions are expected to remain favorable for the next few days. Firefighters will continue to focus on mop up operations, patrolling lines and looking for hot spots. Air resources will remain available to assist as needed. As these operations continue, the public is asked to exercise caution when in the area.

The Flounce Fire broke out late in the afternoon on August 7, expanding rapidly under hot, windy and dry conditions. Continued challenging weather conditions, combined with lightning that sparked additional fires, taxed local resources. The Type 1 Incident Management Team was mobilized to assist ODF’s Southwest Oregon District not just with the Flounce Fire, but also with initial attack on new fire starts. The changing weather patterns have given firefighters a much deserved break.

Approximately 696 personnel are currently assigned to the Flounce Fire, but that number will draw down significantly in the coming days as resources are released for service elsewhere.
