Northwest Fire Potential Summary
Warming and drying is expected through Tuesday as a weak ridge of high pressure builds over the region. Although our models indicate only a background number of ignitions through this period, significant human activity surrounding Eclipse Day is likely to increase the number of new ignitions for public lands in and around the “path of totality.”

After Eclipse Day, an upper-level low pressure system moves eastward along the Washington/Canadian border late Tuesday evening through Thursday. Ahead of this system, sufficient SW moisture will be drawn up to combine with ample instability, generating a threat of isolated thunderstorms for Southern Oregon. On Wednesday, thunderstorm chances improve for Oregon east of the Cascade crest. On Thursday, the associated cold front is expected to move through the region, significantly increasing winds east of the Cascades in WA and adding a chance of thunderstorms to NW05, NW10, and NW09. With ERC/fuel moisture values at or near record levels, any lightning will be especially problematic for IA.
