7/23/18 Klondike and Natchez Fire Update

Weather & Fire Behavior: The hot and dry weather will continue, allowing for continued fire growth. Smoke present over the fire area in the morning is expected to clear by the afternoon.

Yesterday’s Activities: Klondike Fire: Firefighters working throughout the day and evening continued structure protection activities in the Oak Flat area of Josephine County. Helicopters utilized strategic water drops to slow fire spread and hold the fire to the south and west of the Illinois River. Fallers continued to remove hazard trees from old roads and dozer lines, and dozers were used to remove vegetation, further reinforcing these control lines. Fire personnel also scouted areas along Forest Service Road 087 to Pearsoll Peak and along Roads 4103 and 4805 to assess opportunities for a control line.

Natchez Fire: Firefighters working both day and night shifts continued to burnout fuels along control lines as conditions allowed. These burnouts are utilized to reinforce control lines by removing unburned fuels between the line and fire. Burnout operations on the dozer line were completed to Road 4810, and firefighters began burning out fuels along the road to establish a control line.

Today’s Activities: Management of the Klondike and Natchez fires was transferred to Pacific Northwest Team 3 at 6:00 this morning. Fire managers will continue to utilize available resources and tactics to suppress both fires while minimizing risk to the public and firefighters.
Klondike Fire: The fire continues to burn in steep, inaccessible terrain largely within the Kalmiopsis Wilderness. Fire managers will continue scouting opportunities to utilize existing roads, fire scars, and natural barriers to contain and control fire growth. Dozers continue being used to open roads from Illinois River Road west to the wilderness boundary south of the fire.
Natchez Fire: Actions today will include reinforcing the dozer line and existing roads on the north side of the fire. Along the western perimeter, fire personnel will continue working to access Forest Road 60 and assess options for utilizing existing roads and natural barriers to control fire growth to the south will also be assessed. Burnout and holding the eastern perimeter will continue.
