7/24/2018 Sugar Pine Update

Sugar Pine Fact Sheet July 24, 2018  10:00 a.m.

Prospect, Oregon – There are nineteen fires on the High Cascades Ranger District west of Crater Lake National Park (CLNP) managed under the collective name Sugar Pine, which is also the name of one specific fire. Approximately 1,077 total acres have burned on all fires combined. The four largest fires are Sugar Pine, Goodview, Round Top and Union.

Firefighters completed fireline around the Round Top Fire (154 acres) and are conducting firing operations to consume unburned fuel within the fireline. Burnout operations are expected to continue for one more day. Mop-up on the Union Fire (106 acres) will be completed today.

Crews and heavy equipment including dozers, masticators and chippers are constructing indirect firelines to the east and south of the Sugar Pine (395 acres) and Goodview (398 acres) fires. A contingency fireline will also be created along a powerline corridor near the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest (RRSNF) border south of the fires. The incident management teams managing the Sugar Pine Fire and South Umpqua Fire Complex are coordinating efforts and sharing resources to effectively connect containment lines.

Firelines are complete and mop-up operations are taking place on the Union (106 acres), Junction (6 acres) and Sunshine (4 acres) fires. All other fires on the north end of the High Cascades Ranger District have been contained and are in patrol status.

The Sugar Pine Fire now has telephone information line. Please call 541-560-3374 for information.

There will be a community meeting Wednesday July 25 at 6pm at the Prospect Library parking lot.

Weather: Smoke cover may lift today which could increase fire activity. Temperatures will be warmer and relative humidity is expected to be 25-30%. Winds will be from the west/northwest.

Safety: Tonight a large number of firefighters from the Snowshoe Fire/South Umpqua Complex will be relocating to the Sugar Pine Fire Camp at Joseph Stewart State Park south of Prospect. This will provide closer access to their work assignments. Please be aware of slow moving fire traffic, especially near the Hwy 62 entrances to the Park and on Forest Service roads. Smoke can be heavy at times. Air quality information is available at http://oregonsmoke.blogspot.com. Huckleberry pickers should avoid areas of firefighting activity.
