8/12/2018 Taylor Creek/Klondike Fire Update

Taylor Creek/Klondike Fire Update

Sunday, August 12, 2018

Increased fire activity today. The change in wind direction from the northeast will create alignment with fire and fuels increasing fire growth. Fire from the Klondike has extended south, across the Illinois River. Crews are placing focus on protection of communities southeast of Klondike Fire, and residences and recreation sites south of the Illinois River. A primary objective is to reduce the spread of Klondike Fire southward. Scouting continues for additional contingency lines. Mop up and repair continues along the controlled perimeters. Repair work will continue for weeks to come.

Temperature and wind gust will increase slightly today. Temperatures climb to the middle 80’s with winds gusting as high as 25 mph out of the north, becoming northeast. Critical fire weather conditions are expected today. The fire continues to consume fuels between the Klondike Fire and Taylor Creek Fire with Firefighters continue to strengthening the margin between the Klondike Fire and the communities of Selma, Wonder and Wilderville to the east. The wind will push smoke to the southwest today.

Conditions allowing for continued air operations today. Drone use continues for lighting strategic fires to even out and increase depth of fire lines in difficult terrain where fire crew safety would be compromised. Heavy helicopters were dropping water on Saturday and will continue operations today.

Highly traveled areas near the fires will continue to present safety concerns for firefighting crews along area roads. Conditions continue to improve around Galice with increased business and recreational activity. Drivers will continue to see firefighters along the road requiring drivers to use extreme caution.

Bear Camp and Peavine Roads remain closed to traffic due to firefighter activity. Fire lines have been constructed and maintained and crews are mopping up some areas of the Taylor Creek Fire. Wind gusts today will increase the risk of trees and other debris falling on roads.
