Cougar Creek Fire:
Sunday’s firing operations stopped the progression of spot fires within the Entiat River Valley and protected the town of Ardenvoir. “On the heels of an intense two days, our firefighters held the fire lines, and we saved structures,” said Incident Commander Rick Young.
Favorable weather conditions Sunday night allowed direct attack on the Cougar Creek Fire. Personnel worked through the night, protecting structures and strengthening fire lines south of Stormy Creek and north of Mud Creek.
Residents may see smoke in the valleys Monday with an inversion layer putting a lid over the fire. The stable atmosphere makes Monday a great day to directly engage the fire. Firefighting priorities remain in the Entiat River Valley Monday. Active firing occurs on the east side, south of Tyee Creek, in Stormy Creek, and in Potato Creek. Firing operations are also extending around the southeast tip of the fire toward the west. Dozers will reinforce line around the southern and western perimeter to protect Plain.
Lost Fire:
Monday morning’s infrared photos indicated no growth on the Lost Fire; acres holding at 114. Sunday, crews hiked the entire fire perimeter, and the fireline that surrounds the fire is holding.
Bannock Lakes Fire:
This lightning-caused fire is approximately 17 miles west of Stehekin in the Glacier Peaks Wilderness. The fire is currently around 400 acres. It is burning among large rocky outcroppings and isolated clusters of timber in steep, inaccessible terrain. The Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail (PCT) is closed from Suiattle Pass to High Bridge. The PCT detour is from Suiattle Pass to Stehekin. More information and a map is available at www.pcta.org. Aerial observers continue to monitor the fire.
Whitepine Fire:
The Whitepine Fire, in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, is approximately three miles south of Stevens Pass Nordic Center and 19 miles northwest of Leavenworth. This lightning-caused fire remains small, with crews on scene Monday.
Weather and Fire Behavior:
Light and variable winds Monday may result in short term, intense, fire behavior in the afternoon. As the week progresses, daytime temperatures will increase; minimum relative humidity will drop.
Cougar Creek Fire Evacuations:
- Level 3: Means leave now – Entiat River Road north from Mad River Road to the end of Entiat River Road, Ardenvoir, and Mad River Road
- Level 2: Means prepare to evacuate – Entiat River Road from Crum Canyon north to Ardenvoir and all of Crum Canyon Road
- Level 1: Means be aware of a potential evacuation – Entiat River Road from 97A to Crum Canyon Road, Oklahoma Gulch Road, Navarre Coulee Road, from Hwy 97-ALT to South Lakeshore Road, Johnson Creek Road, and First Creek Road

Smoke from the Cougar Creek and Lost Fires continues to be visible from surrounding communities. Individuals with respiratory problems are encouraged to acquire N95 masks. These masks are available at local fire stations, provided by the Chelan County Sheriff's Office. California Interagency Incident Management Team 5 is managing the fire out of the Incident Command Post located at the Entiat School. The team is working closely with cooperators from the US Forest Service, Washington Department of Natural Resources, Entiat Rural Fire District 8, Peshastin Rural District 6, Lake Wenatchee Fire and Rescue, Chelan County Sheriff’s Office, Chelan County Department of Emergency Management, Chelan County Public Utility Dept., WA Dept. of Transportation, American Red Cross, Chelan Public Schools, and Chelan Public Works.
