Current Activity: Warming and Drying Trend Forecasted for the Week
Fire behavior at the Miriam Fire was moderate yesterday, as the area continued to dry from Saturday’s thunderstorms. Firefighters worked to improve Forest Road (FR) 540 in the northeast and FR 1207 on the east flank as future fireline. Good progress was made on structure protection around the Clear Lake organizational camps with additional pumps, hoses and sprinklers installed. Fire managers continued to scout and plan their containment strategies for the north and west flanks of the fire within the Goat Rocks Wilderness.

Today’s operations are to complete the firing operation along FR1207 to further secure that prepared line and continue preparing that road to the south as a future fireline. Heavy equipment including chippers, masticators and log processors have arrived and will begin working to bolster and strengthen the work along FR 1200 to provide suppression opportunities should the fire spread to the east. Assessment of potential structure protection needs at campgrounds, cabins and resorts around Rimrock Lake is ongoing. Aircraft is available to check the spread of the fire while firefighters work to complete important containment lines. A contingent of Australian firefighters will arrive tomorrow to supplement management positions with structure protection, heavy equipment and safety functions.

Weather and Fire Behavior: The weather will warm and dry another notch today, with light winds and a partly cloudy sky. Low fire spread is expected where moisture from Saturday’s thunderstorms remains. El areas of active surface spread is expected with single tree flare-ups and group torching possible with associated short-range spotting and rollout of burning material.

Evacuations: Level 1, 2 and 3 evacuations in the White Pass, Clear Lake and Rimrock Lake areas have not changed. Continue to follow Yakima County OEM for specific details on evacuation information.

Closures: An Emergency Closure is in effect on the Okanogan-Wenatchee and Gifford Pinchot National Forests. The closure area is bounded by State Highway 12, FR 1200, FR 1000, and trails #1128, #1118, the Pacific Crest Trail and includes the White Pass Ski Area. The PCT is closed from Tieton Pass to White Pass with a detour available. Highway 12 remains open and is not currently threatened. Caution is advised for motorists near White Pass to Rimrock Lake due to heavy firefighting traffic in the area.
