Northwest Fire Weather Summary
The upper level ridge continues to build today further warming and drying the region with high temperatures today reaching near record levels before the upper level ridge breaks down tomorrow. The NWS has advisories in effect for excessive heat; hot, unstable air; and high winds and low humidity over the next couple days. See your NWS fire weather planning forecast for the details in your local area. This afternoon brings a chance for isolated thunderstorms along the Cascades. General winds will be light, but gusts may be problematic in the vicinity of any storms. The marine push tomorrow will drop temperatures to near seasonal normal and produce sustained winds in the 20 knot realm with gusts exceeding 30 knots through mountain gaps and along the Columbia Basin. While some showers could develop, there is little chance for wetting rain with this system. Thunderstorms are possible tomorrow afternoon and evening across northern and eastern Washington as well as northeastern Oregon. Cooler temperatures and relatively light winds are expected for the weekend before a moderate warming trend begins next week.

Northwest Fire Potential Summary
Near record fire danger indices along with continued hot and dry weather will keep the Pacific Northwest at or above normal risk for development of significant fires. General winds will remain light until the upper level ridge breaks down tomorrow. Increasingly unstable air today is likely to result in amplified fire behavior. The transition from hot, dry and unstable conditions today to dry breezy winds Friday could create critical fire weather conditions. While the chance for thunderstorms may not be high, any lightning should be very efficient in starting fires in the highly available fuels.
