A cold front from British Columbia moved over the region Friday and Friday night. Gusty west winds kicked up east of the Cascades, mainly in the Columbia Basin but cloud cover and high humidity kept fire potential low. Some rain accumulated in sections of Washington and northern Oregon.

General Information: Most of the field work on both the Beachie and Riverside fires continues to be repairing of fire lines, patrolling and mop-up.  There is an area closure in place, this is a necessity for the safety of firefighters and public.  Recent winds and rains continue to weaken trees, increasing the danger of them falling. Wet roads create unsafe driving and working conditions for all.

Weather and Fire Behavior: Heavy rains and winds from last night will taper to light showers this morning.  Temperatures will be near 50 degrees with west winds 11-14 mph and gusts up to 30 mph on the ridges.  The recent weather will keep fire behavior to limited creeping and smoldering.  Wet conditions can make it difficult and unsafe for firefighters to continue fire suppression repair work.

Riverside Fire: Firefighters were cautious of the muddy conditions that rain created yesterday.  Work will be limited by the same conditions today.

Beachie Creek Fire: Heavy equipment work has been limited.  Hand crews remain to finish fire suppression repair work where it is safe to do so.

Evacuations: Current evacuation information for: Marion County is available at www.co.marion.or.us/Alerts?AlertId=83 or by calling 503-588-5032, and for Linn County is available at www.linnsheriff.org/fire_live_updates_sept_2020/ or by calling 541-812-2260.

Closures: Multiple forest and area closures remain in effect for the safety of firefighters and the public.  For the most up to date information, see the following websites:

10/9/2020 Holiday Farm Fire Update

In addition to working on the remaining suppression work, fire crews have been working for several days to complete suppression repair work ahead of this weekend’s forecasted rains.  The fire has not grown and remains at 173,393 acres.  It is now 84% contained.

Although resources are diminishing and fire camp is being broken down, firefighters and equipment will still be committed to the suppression and repair of the fire and fire lines.  While the Incident Management Team is preparing to demobilize on Tuesday, the local agencies are preparing for the remaining work.  Some resources will stay in the area to continue progress on these continuing tasks.

Weather for today is expected to be much like yesterday, with temperatures in the 70s and relative humidity between 45 and 55 percent.  Winds are expected to be a little breezier today ahead of the cold front.  Tonight, rain is expected to begin around midnight and will continue through tomorrow.

Tomorrow, fewer resources will be in the fire area.  Due to the steep terrain, conditions are too dangerous for firefighters to work on many areas of the fire.  The areas that are deemed safe for personnel will still see some firefighting and repair work activities occurring.

Remember, closures are still in place and will remain until areas are believed to be safe for public use.  This process may take time, as there is a large area to assess.  Please adhere to area and road closures.  These closures are in place to provide for the safety of all.

10/9/2020 Beachie Creek and Riverside Fires Update

Weather and Fire Behavior: Cloudy conditions and cooler temperatures continue for Friday as a cold front moves into the area, bringing gusty winds in the late afternoon. Rain is forecasted to begin Saturday and continue through the weekend.

Riverside Fire: Two 911 calls were received for smoke from the community. Firefighter resources responded. Firefighters are focusing their efforts on mop-up, perimeter patrol and line repair. With management approval, Portland General Electric and Oregon Department of Transportation will be flying drones to assess damages throughout the day. The forecasted weather system could bring an increase in hazards within the fire area, so providing for public and firefighter safety is paramount.

Beachie Creek Fire: Fire growth was limited within a concentrated area of heat within the Bull of the Woods Wilderness and fire behavior is expected to remain minimal with the incoming weather. Firefighters will continue to monitor and patrol the fire perimeter for hot spots. Falling trees and landslides are the greatest safety concerns moving into the weekend for both firefighters and the public.

Evacuations: There are no evacuations in Clackamas County. Current evacuation information for Marion County is available at www.co.marion.or.us/Alerts?AlertId=83 or by calling 503-588-5032. Evacuation information for Linn County is available at www.linnsheriff.org/fire_live_updates_sept_2020/ or by calling 541-812-2260.

Closures:The Willamette National Forest lifted restrictions on campfires. A Closure Order is still in effect, a list of recreation areas within the fire zone that remain closed can be found at  https://go.usa.gov/xGpeV

Repair and Rehabilitation Teams: The Bureau of Land Management Emergency Stabilization and Rehabilitation (ESR) teams and the US Forest Service BAER teams are evaluating the fire areas and preparing a repair plan. These programs are designed to address emergency stabilization issues related to wildland fire. ESR and BAER teams are in place for both the Riverside and Beachie Creek fires.

Springfield, Ore. – Hot and dry conditions persisted over the fire area yesterday and are forecasted again for today. Despite the weather conditions and more active fire behavior, the fire stayed in its same footprint, meaning no growth occurred. The fire has burned 173,094 acres. Firefighters continue to make steady progress and it is now 67% contained.

There are many hazards for firefighters on the line. The steep terrain is one of the biggest hazards they will face. Footing can be treacherous and there are frequently concerns of rolling rocks and other debris. Everyone is reminded of these hazards each day at their operations briefing.

Firefighters working on the night shift have focused on patrolling and extinguishing hot spots along Highway 126. While night shift has fewer resources assigned, their work continues to be vital in the continued progress. These firefighters begin their shift at 7:00 p.m. and work through the night.

With the hot and dry conditions today, visible smokes may be more prevalent. Many of these smokes are well interior in the fire perimeter and do not pose a threat. Please do not call 9-1-1 for fire activity occurring well within the perimeter. Firefighters will continue to work from the perimeter inward to find and extinguish visible smoke and other hot spots.

Many areas may remain closed indefinitely as land managers work to assess safety hazards resulting from the fire. Recreationists and others visiting the forest are encouraged to check for closure information before heading out.
