7/23/2014 Sunflower fire daily update

Sunflower Fire Update

Summary:  A cold front brought cooler temperatures, showers, and thunderstorms over the fire area yesterday. Fire activity limited to ground fire and isolated tree torching, smoldering, and creeping inside the fire perimeter was observed. Crews made excellent progress extinquishing hot spots and securing line in the southern portion of the fire. Crews also made good progress conducting mop-up and dozer line repair in the northern portion of the fire.

Fifty-one residents attended a community meeting in Monument, Oregon yesterday.  Fire personnel provided a history of the fire's progression and discussed future fire activities.

Current Situation:  With burnouts and line construction complete, firefighters will reinforce line, mop-up hot spots, and repair damage caused by suppression activities. If the weather remains cool and wet, fire activity will be significantly reduced today, although single tree torching and smoldering may occur inside the fire perimeter.

Weather:  Cloud cover, high humidity, and possible showers will aid firefighters in their work today. Afternoon thunderstorms with lightening may also occur. A warming and dry trend will arrive by the end of the week.

Area Fire Closures:  An area closure was again expanded on July 19 around the fire for firefighter and public safety. Information and map can be found @ http://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/3964/
