8/18/2004 Lone Mountain 1 Fire Update

            UPDATE

Lone Mountain 1 Fire

                              Monday, August 18, 2014

Lone Mountain 1 Fire is burning in the North Cascades National Park northeast of the community of Stehekin. The fire was started by lightning on July 14th. The fire is burning in steep and remote country of the Stephen Mather Wilderness.  The fire is currently being managed by Martell Gibbons, Type 3 Wildland Fire Management Team. The North Cascades National Park, Fire District #10, and the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest have selected a point protection and modified suppression strategy to manage this fire.

The Golden West Visitor Center and all services in Stehekin are open. Boulder Creek Trail and War Creek Trails are closed to the public until further notice.  This fire is not affecting the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT).

Recent rain (Aug 13 and 14) allowed firefighters to reduce staffing on the Lone Mountain Fire.  With an inch and a half falling in two days, the fire management team has downsized as appropriate. Cooler, damper conditions from the rain reduced fire activity. A drying trend, which started Aug 16, may cause fire activity to increase. Heat can remain in dead trees and forest debris for a long time and reignite with the dryer weather. For the last several days there has been minimal fire activity, primarily smoldering, and no fire growth.  Similar activity is expected over the next several days.

Type 1 Wildland Fire Modules are assigned to the fire specifically to conduct monitoring and point protection.  Reconnaissance flights and helicopter water bucket work are being conducted as needed to monitor and manage the fire.    During a month of active burning on the 2,770 acre Lone Mountain Fire, firefighters held the fire away from the Stehekin community and out of the Twisp River drainage, while allowing it to create a mosaic of burned and unburned areas in the high mountains.
