8/25/15 National Creek Fire Update

Crater Lake National Park is open.
Access is available from the South entrance off of State Highway 62. The north entrance road is closed.

State Highway 230 is open to the public and will stay open when conditions are safe. Check with Tripcheck.com or call 511 for current information. Even when open, areas of dense smoke, fire equipment and firefighters along the road are possible. Pilot car escorts may be used or other restrictions may apply. Please reduce speed to allow for increased fire traffic.
Yesterday’s Activities: The fire became active in the interior of the fire and produced a smoke column during the afternoon, but posed no danger to park visitors. Spot fires near roads were detected and quickly suppressed.

Fire crews completed building hand line to the south west boundary of Crater Lake tying into the Bert Creek Trailhead.

Today’s Activities: West of the fire, crews will continue to monitor and improve containment lines to the Bert Creek Trailhead. Firefighters will continue felling dead trees along the Bert Creek Trail. Fire crews will continue looking for spotting outside of containment lines on the north and east flanks of the fire and remain poised to respond. Law enforcement officers and Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) workers may be assisting travelers along State Highway 230 at the north end of the fire.

Weather: Warm and dry today with predicted light ridge top winds in the morning, changing this afternoon to wind gusts up to 30 mph. The relative humidity is expected to be between 20-30%. The potential for fire spotting remains high in the lodgepole pine areas and firefighters are poised to respond.

Open and Closed:

• Crater Lake National Park is open and accessible via the south entrance. The north Crater Lake National Park entrance is closed.
• A segment of the Pacific Crest Trial is closed from the park north boundary to the junction with Lightning Springs Trail. A suggested reroute is posted along the trail.
• The rim drive is open and smoke in the caldera has been minimal.
• Area closure orders have been issued for the Rogue River-Siskiyou and Umpqua National Forests near Diamond Lake.
• There are trail closures in the National Park and on the Rogue River-Siskiyou and Umpqua National Forest.
