9/12/2015 National Creek Fire Update

National Creek Fire 9/12/2015
  • Today we are expecting dry lightning storms with a Haines Index of 5-6. (Haines Index (HI) is a numerical value that indicates the potential for large wildfires to experience extreme fire behavior.
  • There is hot and dry weather forecasted over the fire area. As the temperatures rise in the afternoon, the air will become unstable and there will be increased fire activity.
  • Firefighters will be poised to implement appropriate suppression tactics should there be new fire ignitions due to the weather and fire behavior.
  • “This fire started August 1, 2015 and the objectives have not changed,” said Crater Lake National Park Fire Management Officer, Greg Funderburk. “Full suppression tactics were implemented based on the values at risk, with the most important being firefighter safety. Fire managers made decisions using aggressive tactics where necessary and Minimum Impact Suppression Tactics (MIST) when possible.” (MIST is a firefighting tactic used to protect and minimize disturbance to the land).
  • Crews continue to work to build and strengthen contingency and control lines.
  • With increased fire activity the chances of the fire being visible is likely. Please drive safely and use pullouts to view the fire or to take photos.
