8/22/2016 Wildland Fire Minute

Published on Aug 22, 2016
A hot, dry spell followed by strong winds left much of the Pacific Northwest ripe for fires. Sunday afternoon, multiple new fires started that resulted in the mobilization of incident management teams and state fire resources to Northeast Washington and eastern Oregon.

Last Wednesday, we also had at least five new starts that are suspicious, including the Withers Fire near Paisley, Oregon. In fact, law enforcement officials believe several fires over the past month in Central Oregon may have been intentionally set. If you have any information, please call the Oregon State Police at (503) 375-3555.

If you start a wildfire, even accidentally, you may be held liable for suppression costs, which can be in the millions. Please adhere to all fire restrictions and do your part to prevent unwanted fires.

Coos Forest Protective Association recently released a public service announcement on this topic. The PSA can be viewed here: https://youtu.be/7tGAR8PrDEc
