Northwest Activity Summary

The fires in Southwest Oregon became active in the mid-afternoon again yesterday. Column development was more aggressive yesterday than previous days. This event was triggered by the clearing of smoke and exposure to solar heating and instability. Those large fires experienced perimeter growth overnight. Predicted lightning produced numerous strikes north of Lake Chelan in Washington and precipitation was negligible. NW Team 7 (Knerr) prepositioned within the Geographic Area. There were 34 new fires for 16,487 acres with 4,572 acres growth on existing fires.

Includes Miles, Railroad Gap, Snowshoe, Columbus, and multiple smaller incidents.

Continued warm and dry for the region Friday and through the weekend. General winds across the region are fairly light but with some exceptions so check your local NWS fire weather forecast for the details in your area. Some isolated thunderstorms are possible over sections of Washington Friday and the weekend which could prove problematic. Northwest Fire Potential Summary

Fire danger remains at or near record values for late July in many PSAs and will continue to climb through the weekend. Even moderate amounts of lightning could result in enough ignitions to elevate the risk of large, costly fires in PSAs NW01 and possibly NW05 and NW08 today and Saturday. General winds do not appear to be a factor in initiation of new significant fires for now. However, a weather pattern shift on Monday and Tuesday looks as if it is poised to bring potential problems with wind and instability to much of Washington and sections of central and eastern Oregon.
