A public meeting will be held tomorrow, Sunday, August 5 at 2 pm at the White Pass Village Inn to provide current updates on the Miriam Fire and associated evacuations and closures.

Current Activity: Fire behavior moderated again yesterday by cool temperatures and, with the aid of aviation resources, firefighters were able to keep the Miriam Fire from expanding significantly. The fire did cross Miriam Creek on the south flank and burned through the night towards the ridge.

Firefighters continued to prepare Forest Road (FR) 1207 for use as a containment line, completed a dozer line on the northeast flank and started constructing a handline up the eastern slope of Round Mountain towards the old Twin Peaks Fire burn scar. Burnout operations along FR 1207 and the dozer line may begin today to strengthen those containment lines. Crews continue to assess and complete structure protection at the organizational camps at Clear Lake, cabins, and resorts around Rimrock. In some cases sprinklers systems are being installed, should they be needed.

On the west flank containment opportunities are being scouted and a ‘fire use module’ has been ordered. A fire use module is a team of firefighters specially trained in wilderness fire suppression. Aircraft will again be available to cool down hot spots around the fire’s perimeter.

Weather and Fire Behavior: Today we expect below normal temperatures with relative humidity above 30% and light westerly winds in the fire area. There is a potential for late afternoon thunderstorms developing which, if they occur, could bring gusty, erratic winds over the fire area. Today’s fire behavior is expected to include areas of active fire spread including flare ups with single tree and group torching on slopes. After Sunday, warm and dry weather will return and continue to build through the week.

Evacuations: Level 1, 2 and 3 evacuations in the White Pass, Clear Lake and Rimrock Lake areas have not changed. Continue to follow Yakima County OEM for specific details on evacuation information.

Closures: An Emergency Closure is in effect on the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. The closure area is bounded by State Highway 12, FR 1200, FR 1000, and trails #1128, #1118 and the Pacific Crest Trail. The PCT is closed from Tieton Pass to White Pass with a detour available. Highway 12 remains open and is not currently threatened. Caution is advised for motorists near White Pass to Rimrock Lake due to heavy firefighting traffic in the area.
