9/13/2018 Cougar Creek Fire Update

Cougar Creek, Lost, and Bannock Lakes Fires
Closure Area remains in place
Thursday, September 13, 2018
Cougar Creek Fire:  Crews and equipment continued to repair the effects of suppression efforts. Work on Thursday will concentrate on the contingency lines south of the fire along Mosquito Ridge and north on the Shady Pass Road near Crescent Hill. The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest has established standards for how heli-spots, dozer lines, hand-lines and roads used for suppression need to be repaired. Incident personnel work with local resource advisors to ensure these benchmarks are met before moving to the next area. Additional light rain showers fell across the fire on Wednesday. This moisture combined with continuing cool temperatures and high relative humidity has had a dampening effect on fire behavior. The light fuels, needles and small twigs, that are major elements of fire movement are damp. That has limited fire activity to burning and smoldering in the heavier fuels such as snags and downed logs and kept the fire from pushing its established perimeter. An aerial drone with infrared photogrammetry capability is being used to monitor fire activity.

Lost Fire: This fire shows minimal activity and is being monitored by air.
Weather and Fire Behavior: Temperatures will remain below normal and a chance of showers is possible throughout the coming weekend. Winds will be light and from the west. These conditions are not conducive to major fire expansion.
The public is reminded that a Fire Closure Area remains around the Cougar Fire. Please stay out of the closed area so firefighters can safely continue putting this fire to bed.
Restrictions and Closures: Fire use restrictions are still in place. No campfires are permitted. To ensure public and firefighter safety, some road and trail closures remain in effect. Forest visitors are encouraged to call or visit the local Ranger Station or visit the Forest’s Interactive Forest Closure Map found at: https://www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/okawen/alerts-notices
