Schneider Springs Fire Update
September 26, 2021
Start Date: August 4, 2021
Cause: Lightning
Size: 107,072 acres (43,331 hectares)
Percent Contained: 43%
Resources Assigned: 439 resources
Crews (10); Engines (24); Dozers (2); Air Resources (2); Other Heavy Equipment (14)

Yesterday and Overnight: Saturday’s warm and dry weather presented firefighters the opportunity to make considerable progress toward containment of the fire on the northern edge. Fire crews also conducted suppression repair, road restoration and equipment retrieval across the areas where containment is already secured inside the fire’s perimeter, and around its eastern and southern edges. Some fire growth persisted as it filled in unburned fingers in the wilderness’s rugged terrain on the west flank. Fire crews continued to restore the dozer line to the northwest of Goose Prairie and structure protection measures remained in place around Bumping River Road’s communities as well as at American Ridge Ski Lodge. The fire has worked its way northwest down American Ridge and is holding at the river. Structure protection efforts have been effective across the fire; yesterday, crews activated sprinklers around cabins along the banks of the American River as an extra measure. Good weather also supported deployment of air assets for water drops in the area and along the partially completed containment lines between American Ridge and Edgar Rock. At Cliffdell, crews monitored control lines and structure protection measures. Overnight, firefighters patrolled the areas where fire was most active on Saturday and built upon the progress of day crews where possible.

Today: The arrival of cooler and wetter weather has been delayed until Sunday evening. Although temperatures are forecast to be 5 – 10 degrees F cooler than Saturday, conditions will likely support efforts to connect and reinforce containment lines along the 1706 Road near Edgar Rock across to American Ridge and down to the American River as well as along the SR 410 corridor near Cliffdell. To do this, crews will use controlled fire tactics to clean-up pockets of unburned fuels and utilize masticators (heavy equipment that grinds materials into pulp) to remove debris from the lines. Firefighters will perform hazard tree mitigation around Bumping Lake, pick-up equipment no longer in use and monitor American Ridge. Firefighters plan to finish the backhauling (retrieving) of equipment in areas where the fire is contained while road and repair work will continue across the fire area.
