Paradise Fire Update

Dry and warm weather is moving into the Paradise Fire area this weekend. Smoke may be visible and some increased fire behavior is expected. The fire is managed with a confinement strategy to prevent spread across the Queets River or downstream toward the park boundary, more than 5 miles to the west. Firefighters are in position to take action on possible spot fires and any new growth that approach these areas.
The fire's effect on the forest is patchy, with impacts ranging from barely scorched in some places to fully brown trees in others. Some areas within the fire perimeter are completely unburned. Most of the fire spread in the last month has been uphill and upriver toward the head of the river. This remote area is surrounded by high elevation rocky ridges which are natural barriers to fire spread.
The Olympic peninsula will be busy this weekend with visitors and area residents recreating and camping. There is a ban on open fires in the park's wilderness backcountry, including all locations along the coast. Campfires are permitted only in established fire grates at front country campgrounds.
