7/25/2017 Wildland Fire Minute

Published on Jul 25, 2017
Lightning hammered south central and southeastern Oregon yesterday with more than 400 strikes. Southern Oregon reported heavy initial attack response to new starts yesterday, with four new large fires reported in the Northwest. Lightning remains in the forecast for southern Oregon through Friday, and much of the area is under a "Red Flag Warning" today.

The largest new fire is the 8,000-acre Bowden Fire on the Vale BLM district, and is challenging for firefighters to access due to rough terrain. The Burns District of BLM is working on a 2,500 acre fire that is threatening structures south of Fields, Oregon.

The Northwest has a few fires that will be around for a long time, due to the fact they are burning in areas that are not safe for firefighters to access. For all of these fires, firefighters are building a big box to contain the fire using natural features and building line where it is safe to do so and they can be most effective in stopping the spread. The Chetco Bar Fire in the Kalmiopsis Wilderness on the Rogue River Siskyou National Forest is 1,400 acres and burning in the fire scar from the 2002 Biscuit Fire. The Indian Creek Fire in the Mark O. Hatfield Wilderness on the Mt. Hood NF is 90 acres and burning in extremely steep, rugged country with 75 percent slopes. Smoke from this fire can be seen in the Cascade Locks area on Interstate 84.

Washington State also has two long-term fires. The Diamond Creek Fire in the Pasayten Wilderness on the Okanogan Wenatchee National Forest is 250 acres and the Noisy Creek Fire near Sullivan lake on the Colville NF is similar in size. Firefighters are also taking indirect action on both of those fires.
