Northwest Activity Summary

Warm and dry yesterday, with mostly dry lightning entering southeastern Oregon in the evening and early morning hours and resuming this morning. Moderate initial attack yesterday, with the heaviest in south-central Oregon. The largest new fire reported at 1,200 acres in central Washington. Minimal growth and increased containment on large fires yesterday.

Bissell WA-NES-001521. 7 mi N of Hunters WA. Start 7/23. Full Suppression. Cause: Unknown. 200 acres. 0% containment. Timber/brush/grass. Fire was active overnight. Structures threatened. Level 3 evacuations are in place. IMT3 will assume command this morning (7/24).

Horn Butte 0594 OR-PRD-000594. ICT3. 4 mi S of Arlington, OR. Start: 7/21. Full Suppression. Cause: Human. 9,300 acres (+6,000). 100% containment. Brush/grass. Minimal fire behavior. Additional acreage documents private land previously burned. Last report on morning briefing unless significant activity occurs.

400 WA-SES-000250. IMT3. 4 mi W of Mattawa, WA. Start 7/20. Full Suppression. Cause: Unknown. 24,650 acres (+0). 99% containment. Brush/grass. Minimal fire behavior. Transfer of command to local unit. Last report on morning briefing unless significant activity occurs.

Northwest Fire Potential Summary

Expect a surge in Initial attack activity today and Tuesday as a thunderstorm pattern provides lightning for ignitions in Oregon moving from south to northeast. This is due a weather system parked just off the Northern California coast. The combination of hot weather, high fire danger, and increased initial attack means the potential for new large fires is elevated in PSAs NW04, NW07, NW11 and NW12 for the next several days. Lightning starts are possible elsewhere in central and eastern Oregon today and Tuesdaytrailing off Wednesday.

By Tuesday, thunderstorm cells are expected to become wetter which should help reduce the threat of new large fires and ease pressure on initial attack with fewer starts due to rain with thundercells. The lightning pattern will eventually move eastward by Wednesday.
