8/5/2018 - Oregon Dept. of Forestry Fire Update

Oregon Department of Forestry

Fire Update for Sunday, Aug. 5, 2018
South Umpqua Complex continues to grow

The Northern Rockies Incident Management Team, in unified command with the Oregon Department of Forestry and the Oregon State Fire Marshal, assumed command of South Umpqua Complex and the Sugar Pine Fires today. On Saturday the Miles Fire, one of multiple fires within the complex, expanded to the southeast as the fire on the north slope of Burnt Peak reached the ridge top.

Air resources are being used to slow the spread onto private land and to protect structures. Crews are using burnout methods to reduce fuels between containment lines and the main fire.

Elevated fire weather conditions continue as drier air and gusty northwest winds impact the complex.

Evacuations and Closures
The Level 3 Evacuation area was expanded by the Jackson County Sheriff on Saturday in the Elk Creek area. Additional Level 2 Evacuation areas to the north of Lost Creek Lake were added as well. For additional information about the evacuations, call the Rogue Valley Fire Information Center from 7 am to 10 pm at 541-474-5305.

South Valley Fire 40% contained as firefighters continue to make progress

ODF and the Oregon State Fire Marshal's Green Team continue to make good progress to secure and hold the line on the South Valley Fire. Crews completed hand line and dozer line today. While the fire is in full mop-up, an overnight infrared flight revealed smoldering hot spots in many areas along the fire's perimeter. Fire crews will be spending the next few days cooling the fire's edges and interior.

ODF IMT #2 Incident Commander Chris Cline and the rest of the team thanked the Oregon State Fire Marshal for their valued partnership and leadership in the protection of the communities in and around Dufur. "We mobilize as two teams, but come together as one when duty calls," said Cline.

Evacuations
Evacuation levels remain unchanged with a level 2 and level 1 in place. For details on evacuation orders visit Wasco County Sheriff's Facebook page.

Crews scan for heat pockets as Garner Complex winds down

Firefighters on the Garner Complex are working diligently toward handing the management of the fire back to the local Oregon Dept. of Forestry district. Crews are using palm-held infrared scanners to detect pockets of heat near containment lines. Extinguishing the hot spots became the top priority for crews on mop up operations. The northern portion of the fire remains in patrol status. Yesterday, fire crews returned over a mile of hose.  Fire managers are re-allocating resources to support initial attack on new incidents near the fire.
