A Complete and Coordinated Response Across Boundaries

Medford, Oregon 4 August 2022—Although no new fires have been detected today, a warming and drying trend is keeping fire detection and initial attack firefighters on alert across the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest (RRSNF). Aerial patrol, infrared detection and mapping, and ground patrols have been diligent in searching for any holdover fires from recent lightning.

Other Fires of Note:

Smokey Fire- Early this morning RRSNF dispatched resources to a newly detected fire on the Klamath NF to support initial attack efforts. A Type3 Incident Commander and a Task Force of engines responded alongside our partner agencies. Currently, the fire is estimated to be 27 acres lined and plumbed. Firefighters from the RRSNF will remain on scene to continue mop up efforts until relieved by the Incident Management Team who is managing adjacent fires on the KNF.

Alex Fire- RRSNF resources have been making good progress towards containment working under California Incident Management Team 10 and are working to build line directly along the fire’s edge. It has not grown in the past 24 hours and is showing moderated activity within its 151 acre footprint.

Information on the Klamath National Forest fires can be located here: https://bit.ly/3BxnC8y

Wards Creek Fire- Additional information can be found on the Oregon Department of Forestry page located here: https://swofire.com/

The Forest has also been supporting the Windigo Fire on the Umpqua National Forest with our aerial supervision platform (Air Attack) and have placed orders for 5 additional T2 hand crews to be staged out of our J. Herbert Stone Nursery staging area, which will be available for geographic area utilization in Oregon and Washington.

There remains a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms in the local forecast and RRSNF will continue with elevated staffing levels until the fire threat diminishes and confidence increases that the threat of holdover fires from recent storms has passed.

Unless significant new fire activity occurs on the RRSNF, the fire update will be issued once daily.

Please continue to be mindful of fire restrictions as you go out and recreate on lands within SW Oregon, it takes all of us!
