Firefighters Hold the Miriam Fire in Gusty Conditions

Current Activity: Despite hot, dry, windy conditions yesterday firefighters kept the Miriam Fire within established containment lines. A hot shot crew hiked into the Clear Fork Fire to assess and evaluate options for containment while helicopter bucket drops minimized the fires spread. On the Miriam Fire crews continued to construct handline from Ginnette Lake east toward Twin Peaks and worked on protection measures for ski area structures. Helicopters continued to drop buckets of retardant in the Twin Peaks Fire scar to slow the fire’s spread. On the east flank work continued to mop up and strengthen containment lines to limit the fire’s spread.

Today on the Miriam Fire, a Wildland Fire Module will continue to hike into the Goat Rock Wilderness to evaluate suppression options on the southwest flank while crews prepare to protect structures with hose lays and sprinkler kits on top of the White Pass Ski Resort ridge near the Pacific Crest Trail. Firefighters will continue to work to complete the fireline to Twin Peaks. Mop up will continue along FR 1207 and the control line constructed in the Hell Creek drainage. Structure protection resources will again be present in the Clear Lake area, and contingency lines construction along FR 1204 and 1205 will continue. [CW1]  Helicopters are available to apply retardant and water as needed. Fire managers will also be working to develop containment strategies for the Clear Fork Fire while aerial resources hold the fire in check.

Weather and Fire Behavior: Although, there is a Red Flag Warning in effect to 11 am this morning, a strong marine layer has flowed in over the fire last night bringing cool moist air. Temperatures today should only be in the 60’s with minimum relative humidity rising to 38%. Ridge top winds up to 30 mph are expected this afternoon which could support active fire behavior with group torching, upslope crown runs, and long-range spotting, especially where winds align with slope and drainage.

Evacuations: Level 1, 2 and 3 evacuations in the White Pass, Rimrock Lake and Clear Lake areas have not changed. Continue to follow Yakima County OEM for specific details on evacuation information.

Closures: A Closure Area is in effect on the Okanogan-Wenatchee and Gifford Pinchot National Forests. Find a map and list of affected sites at: https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/article/6066/45371. The PCT is closed from Elk Pass to White Pass. Highway 12 remains open and is not currently threatened. Caution is advised for motorists near White Pass to Rimrock Lake due to heavy firefighting traffic in the area and WDOT road construction.
