Community Meeting:
There will be a community meeting Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Plain Community Church in Plain where members of California Interagency Incident Management Team 5 will provide an update on the Cougar Creek and Lost Fires.
Cougar Creek Fire:
The Cougar Creek Fire is 20 miles northwest of Entiat and is reported at 9,178 acres. A total of 811 personnel, including 20 crews, 4 aircraft, 28 engines and 12 bulldozers are being shared between the Cougar Creek and Lost Fires.
Favorable weather conditions Tuesday resulted in minimal fire activity and little further movement of the fire into Grandma Creek. Some of the increase in acreage and smoke observed was due to burnout operations on the east side of the fire. Crews, supported by helicopters and airtankers, were able to build fireline south of the Tyee lookout. The fire remained relatively quiet overnight, with limited activity reported in the Young and Mad Creek areas. Wednesday, firefighters will continue to work on the ground along the eastern side of the fire, using aerial support for continued line construction.
Lost Fire:
The Lost Fire has grown to approximately 107 acres. Hard work by the hotshot crew, smokejumpers, heli-repellers and a local Type 2 initial attack crew kept the Lost Fire within a small footprint.The same group of firefighters will use aerial support to make more progress building line in the difficult terrain.
Bannock Lakes Fire:
This lightning-caused fire is approximately 17 miles west of Stehekin in the Glacier Peaks Wilderness. It is less than 50 acres and is burning in steep, inaccessible terrain. Whitepine Fire:
The Whitepine Fire, in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, is approximately 3 miles south of Stevens Pass Nordic Center and 19 miles northwest of Leavenworth. This lightning-caused fire remains small and is being regularly monitored from the air. . Information on the Forest area closure around the fire is available at https://bit.ly/2nesWqg.
Weather and Fire Behavior:
Firefighters will begin to see a change in temperatures affecting the fire, with mostly sunny and hot conditions forecast. Temperatures will be 97-101 degrees in the valley with 78-83 degrees in the ridgetops. Winds will remain out of the southwest at 8 to 11 mph with gusts at 20 mph. Residents should expect to see areas of smoke rising from the Cougar Creek and Lost fires during the afternoon and evening hours.
Evacuations:
Chelan County Emergency Management has raised the Evacuation Level to 3 as of noon Tuesday, August 7, 2018. This means "Leave Now." The evacuation area is from Potato Creek north to the end of the Entiat River Road. Level 2 evacuations are in effect from Mad River north to Potato Creek. With the Level 3 evacuation again in place, the Red Cross will continue to provide services to those affected by the evacuation. Smoke:
Smoke from the Cougar Creek and Lost Fires continue to be visible from surrounding communities. Individuals with respiratory problems are encouraged to acquire N95 masks. These masks are available at local fire stations, provided by the Chelan County Sheriff's Office. Closures:
U.S. Forest Service lands, roads, and trails are closed within Forest Roads 5700, 5200, 6101, 5800, 5605. Campgrounds along the Entiat River Road north of Potato Creek are closed. For additional information on this closure go to https://bit.ly/2AI9BqW.
Incident Management Team:
California Interagency Incident Management Team 5 is managing the fire out of the Incident Command Post located at the Entiat School.
