At approximately 3:30 p.m., Saturday afternoon, the Douglas Forest Protective Association responded to a reported natural cover fire near Horse Prairie, located 12 miles west of Riddle and 8 miles Southeast of Camas Valley. Crews arrived on scene of the Horse Prairie Fire and estimated that it was already 50 acres in size with multiple spot fires around the main fire. Due to the size of the fire, additional engines and aviation resources responded to assist with suppression efforts. Crews from DFPA, Coos Forest Protective Association, Oregon Department of Forestry, and Tenmile Rural Fire Department were all working on the fire Saturday, as well as crews from multiple industrial landowners, logging companies and contract firefighting crews.
The Horse Prairie Fire is burning on both private industrial forest lands and BLM forest lands, which include re-prod stands, second growth timber and logging slash. No homes are currently threatened by the fire. At 8:00 p.m., Saturday evening, the Horse Prairie Fire was estimated to be 350 acres in size. Crews will continue to work on the fire overnight.
DFPA has ordered an Incident Management Team from the Oregon Department of Forestry to assist with suppression efforts on the Horse Prairie Fire. ODF Incident Management Team 3 (IC Smith) will assume command of the fire, Sunday afternoon.
The cause of the Horse Prairie Fire is currently under investigation.
