7/20/2021 Summit Trail Fire Morning Update

INCHELIUM, WASHINGTON – The Summit Trail Fire started on July 12th approximately 17 miles west of Inchelium after a lightning storm moved through the area. 

California Interagency Incident Management Team 10 is in command of the fire. 

The Summit Trail Fire burned actively until about midnight. Night shift crews were busy overnight containing a spot on the fire’s western edge and continuing to patrol and mop up. 

The priority for today is the south/southeastern side of the fire, with dozers working directly along the fire’s active edge to stop the fire’s spread in the Beaver Dam Creek drainage and toward Twin Lakes. They will also continue mop up along the west, holding the fire at Bridge Creek and using dozers to make sure that the spot from overnight remains contained. Fire growth for the last several days has been primarily toward the northwest, but predicted convective activity near the fire could cause erratic winds today, and firefighters are remaining vigilant for the possibility of changing conditions. The fire continues to actively burn to the south. Objectives today are to keep the fire north of Bridge Creek Highway, east of BIA Road 73, south of Sitdown Creek, and west of Twin Lakes. The weather today is predicted to remain hot and dry. 

A #RedFlagWarning is in effect in the area for multiple fire weather hazards resulting in critical fire weather conditions through Wednesday evening. Two rounds of lightning with the first moving through Tuesday morning and the next expected Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Both rounds of thunderstorms will occur over eastern districts in Washington and north Idaho. The Reservation is currently shut down to industrial activities and the general public. The Tribes have imposed an Industrial Fire Precaution Level IV general shutdown, which closes all forest roads to the public. State and county improved roads (with a paved or gravel surface) remain open. The Summit Trail fire is burning on the Coville Indian Reservation.
