Northwest Fire Potential Summary
Lightning will continue along and east of the Cascades today with some storms lingering overnight across eastern portions of Washington and Oregon. With near or record high fire danger, even wet thunderstorms can result in new fire starts. Thunderstorm outflow winds can create erratic fire behavior. Moderate to heavy initial attack and several new large fires are expected across the region due to the abundant lightning and dry fuels.
As an upper level trough moves onshore over the weekend bringing lower temperatures and slightly higher RH to the region, Showers are possible in western Washington and northwest Oregon. Temperatures and RH will not moderate as much east of the Cascades and stronger westerly winds will develop. Stronger winds along and east of the Cascades will increase fire behavior on any existing fires and spark holdovers this weekend and into early next week. Pay close attention to your local NWS fire weather planning forecast for more details on weather that can affect firefighter safety.
