There has been a red flag warning issued for today from 10:00am to 10:00pm. Early column development this morning may be an indication of a difficult day on the fire today. Winds are expected to be 20-25 mph today over most of the fire area. These winds, combined with continued warm and dry weather, can be expected to increase fire activity this afternoon.
Crews will continue their work in developing primary containment lines and developing alternate lines as backup. Yesterday evening crews tried to take advantage of more-favorable conditions to conduct burn out operations as a tactic to strengthen containment lines. Today’s activities will focus on the north and east side of the fire that are closest to the threatened communities. Numerous spot fires are developing and crews are actively identifying them and containing them where possible. Depending on the terrain, crews are working off existing roadways to develop containment line, or are using heavy equipment like dozers to cut line through previously fire scarred areas.
Oregon State Fire Marshal Green Team IMT has arrived along with five task forces of engines to assist with structure protection. Today these units will be focusing on the communities of Crossroads and Edington. These resources were made available when Governor Kate Brown invoked the Conflagration Act. This action authorizes resources from across the state to respond and assist the greater Sisters community. Engine crews will be surveying the neighborhoods and providing assistance in strengthening defendable space around dwellings.
