Warm Springs OR – A taskforce of State Fire Marshal Engines and local firefighters had a successful night extinguishing hotspots and securing the South Junction/ Culpus Bridge area. There was little fire activity overnight. While firefighters feel more comfortable making recommendations to reduce evacuation levels that are affecting this area, they will decide the timeline to implement the reduction later today.
The Marion and Washington County task force engines from the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s Office completed their last shift yesterday and last night respectively. Both have moved to the Milli Fire to provide structure protection support to firefighters. Later today, a third task force from Multnomah County will also leave.
Interior pockets of juniper, grass and other shrubs are smoldering. These interior pockets may pose a risk to firefighters and containment lines in the future if they flare up. To remove this risk, firefighters are evaluating the possibility of burning these islands located within newly constructed containment lines this morning. This burn, if it occurs, will be approximately 4,000 acres, and will produce a visible column of smoke for a short time.
A flight will occur today to map the fire’s perimeter. A radio repeater will also be taken down to be used on other fires in need of radio communication equipment.
The Red Cross Evacuation Center at the Warm Springs Community Center will remain open through the weekend for those who would like additional support.
If visiting the Warm Springs Reservation, please be respectful of our home. What you pack in - pack out
