Around 2:00 pm on Friday, August 4, smoke was reported near
Rebel Creek Trail about 13 miles south of Blue River, OR along Aufderheide
Scenic Byway (Forest Road 19). The Rebel Fire is currently 84 acres and is
burning north and east into the Three Sisters Wilderness. Approximately 120
firefighters are working to contain the fire, however, steep terrain and thick
fuel has hindered progress. The Forest has transitioned the management of the
Rebel fire to the Gila / Las Cruces Incident Management Team as of 6:00 am
Monday.
Closures: Travelers along the Aufderheide Scenic
Byway (Forest Service Road 19) should expect to see increased fire traffic and
smoke. For public health and safety, Forest Service Road 19 has been closed for
public use from Hard Rock Campground on the north to Frissell Crossing to the
South. Both campgrounds are open to the public. Rebel Trailhead #3324/#3323 and
Red Diamond Campgrounds are closed.
Smoke from the fire rises up and away during the daytime,
but in the evening smoke can pool back down in canyons, drainages, and basins.
Smoke can hurt your eyes, irritate your respiratory system, and intensify
chronic heart and lung problems. Your eyes are your best tools to determine if
it’s safe to be outside. If visibility is over 5 miles, the air quality is
generally good. If you are having health effects from smoke exposure then take
extra care to stay inside or get to an area with better air quality. You should
also see your doctor or healthcare professional as needed.
