The Head Water Fire started Saturday, Aug. 12 near Jenkins Creek about 11 miles northeast of Goldendale.
Windy, dry conditions spread the fire rapidly through logging slash into standing timber in the West Fork of the Little Klickitat River valley as local crews provided initial response. Southeast Washington Interagency Type 3 Team 1 was ordered Saturday to bring in additional firefighters.
Approximately 150 people from local, private, state and federal firefighting agencies are currently working to control the fire. Pasco Fire Department Chief Bob Gear is Incident Commander for the team, which is headquartered at Goldendale Middle School.
The fire is burning in private timber and is sized at about 105 acres.
Rain and cooler temperatures Sunday slowed the fire’s growth and let dozers and ground crews contain about 25 percent of the fire.
Crews worked through cold temperatures Sunday night to solidify containment lines, and Monday’s efforts are expected to increase containment to approximately 40 percent. Commanders expect the fire to be fully contained by the end of shift Thursday.
Updates will be provided as they happen on the Southeast Washington Incident Management Team Facebook page at www.facebook.com/sewaimt, and on Twitter at
