Location: Approximately 20 miles west-southwest of Hood River, Oregon in the
Mark O. Hatfield Wilderness on the Hood River Ranger District of the Mt. Hood National Forest
Light rain fell on the Indian Creek Fire over the weekend, but not enough to wet the vegetation. It will take a considerable amount of rain to soak through the forest canopy and the forest floor. The rain and cooler temperatures increased the relative humidity and made the vegetation harder to ignite, but several hot areas in the fire continue to smoke. The forecast for this week is for a warming and drying trend.
The fire has shown little growth and is still about 83 acres in size. Taking advantage of the cooler, moister weather, the Sikorsky S-58T “medium” helicopter assigned to the fire did not fly over the weekend to allow the pilot some required rest time. If the fire shows more activity this week, the pilot will be able to drop water on it. So far water drops have been successful in keeping the fire in check.
A new Remote Automated Weather Station (RAWS) has been installed on Indian Mountain. This will give more accurate weather readings for the fire vicinity. The webcam in this location has been helpful for monitoring the fire. Fire personnel check the camera several times each day for indications of increased fire activity such as visible flames, more smoke, or smoke in a new location.
The Cascade Type 2 Initial Attack Crew is cutting brush along the 2810 Road. They are also continuing to monitor the fire for any changes in activity level. Most of the mountains over 3500' in elevation were covered by low clouds most of Sunday, limiting visibility.
Effective August 9, 2017, there are public use restrictions on campfires, smoking, internal combustion engines, and off-highway motorized vehicles on the Mt. Hood National Forest. Please contact the Forest or check their website for further details: https://www.fs.usda.gov/
Trail & Area Closure:
Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail remains open but there is a closure in the fire area. The northern portion of Eagle Creek Trail #440 off of Interstate 84 is open for 4.8 miles. The southern part of Eagle Creek Trail, and several other trails are closed. Wahtum Lake and Indian Springs Campgrounds are closed. A map and full list of closures can be found on the websites below.
With the current low level of fire activity on the Indian Creek Fire, we are producing new updates whenever there is change in the fire's size or activity level, or other significant events occur.
