Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest
Fire Activity Update – 8/18/20
Southwest OR—Aerial reconnaissance flights continue to be flown twice a day over the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest. No fires have been found on the RRSNF. Additional firefighting resources including engines, water tenders and hand crews continue to be available for quick response and aggressive initial attack on fire starts throughout RRSNF or to assist neighboring fire agencies.
Several resources have been shared with other agencies to assist with initial attack:
- Two Type 1 helicopters provided assistance on fires on the Fremont-Winema National Forest. One remains assigned to the Crane Fire in Lake County.
- Type 2 Initial Attack Crew is assisting in the Sky Lakes Wilderness on the Fremont-Winema National Forest.
- An Air Attack platform provided relief on the Warm Springs Reservation.
- Siskiyou Rappellers were dispatched to the Willamette National Forest and returned.
This time of year fire agencies really rely on the conscientious efforts by residents and visitors. Fire danger truly is HIGH. The fuels in the forest are very receptive to a fire starting. The grass, leaves, duff and smaller trees can ignite easily with just a spark.
HIGH fire danger continues today, but the RRSNF begins EXTREME fire danger tomorrow. Watch for further information later today. Check fire restrictions each time before going out to recreate and follow the fire prevention restrictions to help limit possible fire starts. Report fires or any activity that could result in a fire starting. For information on current RRSNF fire restrictions, go to: https://www.fs.usda.gov/
Year-to-date, the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest has responded to 20 fires with a total of 2.3 acres burned. Three of these fires were caused by lightning, and 17 were human-caused.
