The Sourdough Fire is being managed by the Southern Area Gray Incident Management Team. MitcKetron (Gray Team Incident Commander) assumed command of the Sourdough Fire on Tuesday, August 01, at 7:00 AM local time.

Size: 25 acres Location: Ross Lake National Recreation Area, approximately 3 miles north of Diablo Dam

County: Whatcom Start Date: July 29, 2023 Containment: 0% Cause: Lightning Total Personnel: 91

The Sourdough Fire was reported on Saturday July 29. The fire is located in Ross Lake National Recreation Area within North Cascades National Park Service Complex, burning in steep terrain in mixed timber.

Yesterday’s Activities: There was minimal fire activity over night on Monday along the southern flank in heavy dead and downed fuels.

Today’s Activities: Fire personnel will continue to scout and identify possible fire containment lines. Helicopter water drops will continue as needed to slow fire spread.

Weather: Sunny, with a high near 78. West wind between 3 and 11 mph.

Closures: Trail and camp closures remain in effect due to fire activity. Closure information can be found at https://www.nps.gov/noca/planyourvisit/fire-closures.htm . Access across Diablo Dam is limited to Skagit Tours, Ross Lake Resort, and North Cascades Environmental Learning Center reservation holders only.

Safety: Motorists are urged not to pull over along state Route 20 near the Diablo Dam. While the road remains open, keep in mind your safety and those of first responders. Do not pull over to take photos or deploy drone aircraft.

If you fly, we can’t. Unauthorized drone flights (UAS) pose serious risks to firefighter and public safety and the effectiveness of wildfire suppression operations. Aerial firefighting is suspended when unauthorized UAS are in the area, allowing wildfire to grow larger.

No evacuations are in effect.
