MOP UP CONTINUES ON WILEY CREEK FIRE, HOT WEATHER PERSISTS

Sweet Home, Ore.— Firefighters on the Wiley Creek Fire, located approximately nine miles southeast of Sweet Home, continue to make great strides in mopping up the fire. Lines held overnight despite lower relative humidities and higher temperatures, and firefighters were able to mop up close to 100 feet into the interior of the fire on most of the fire perimeter. Due to this progress, containment has increased to 25% this morning, and the fire remains in its current footprint of 241 acres.

Today, personnel assigned to the fire have decreased slightly to 311, and 11 engines, nine crews, six water tenders, 13 tree fallers, various dozers and logging equipment, as well as one Type 1 and two Type 2 helicopters are working on the incident. Their goals remain the same on Monday, with a focus on mopping up existing lines and being ready for any change in fire behavior and activity.

Red Flag Warning issued by the National Weather Service remains in effect until 8 p.m., and an Excessive Heat Warning is in place until Wednesday at 11:00 p.m. High temperatures are expected to reach the 100s, humidities will remain low near 20% and 5 – 15 mile per hour winds will continue to test the fire lines today. Smoke continues to filter west from the Lookout Fire, located approximately 31 miles southeast of Sweet Home. Smoke drift maps and air quality information is always available on https://fire.airnow.gov/.

With multiple fires on the landscape, help firefighters by following all local regulations, found here: https://www.oregon.gov/odf/fire/pages/restrictions.aspx. Additional wildfire prevention tips are available at www.keeporegongreen.org

Level 1 (Be Ready) and Level 2 (Be Set) evacuations remain in place. For more information on evacuations, visit https://www.linnsheriff.org/. No campfires of any kind are allowed on the Willamette National Forest.

The closure order for Green Peter Reservoir remains in effect. Please respect all closures so that firefighters can focus on the containment of this fire.
