6/12/2025 Central Oregon Fire Update

Central Oregon — Interagency resources have responded to approximately 24 fires across Central Oregon since June 10, following a recent lightning storm. The Central Oregon region received approximately 5,102 lightning strikes over the past 72 hours.

The following are updates on incidents requiring extended attack: 

The Sage Hollow Fire started on June 11 at 2:11 p.m., located approximately 4-5 miles east of West Butte. The fire has spread to an estimated 8.8 acres and 75% containment. The cause is attributed to lightning. Interagency fire crews are engaged in suppression efforts with resources including 3 engines, air attack, and a Type 3 helicopter from Brothers-Hampton RFPA. Today, resources are prioritizing the establishment of control lines and assessing fire behavior. 

The Juniper Hills Fire started on June 11 at 3:30 p.m., located 6 miles east of Post. The fire has spread to an estimated 35 acres and is 0% contained. The cause is currently under investigation. Forward progression has been stopped and fire is holding within the 35-acre footprint. Interagency fire crews are actively suppressing the wildfire with resources that consist of 4 engines, 1 hotshot crew, and 1 dozer. Today, resources are focused on assessing fire behavior and establishing control lines. 

The Ferry Fire started on June 12 approximately 1.5 miles south of Cottonwood Canyon State Park along the John Day River. The fire is currently estimated to be 5,000 acres and is 0% contained.  The cause remains under investigation. Interagency fire crews are currently suppressing the wildfire with the following resources: 4 aerial resources, 2 engines, 2 handcrews, and a structure protection task force out of Hermiston, OR. Two hotshot crews are en route and additional resources have been ordered including the Central Oregon Type 3 Incident Management Team.

Evacuations are currently in place for Cottonwood Canyon State Park and Highway 206 is currently closed between milepost 12-20. 

Today, resources are prioritizing point protection of all structures, ensuring safety of all impacted public. Firefighters are establishing a safe starting point to begin the fireline off of Highway 206 northwest of Cottonwood Canyon State Park.

The John Day River is not closed through the area, however, active water dipping by helicopters from the river will be taking place for several days. Boaters are asked to not stop or linger in the active fire zone and follow all directions from on-site fire personnel.
