Much of the West, and the entirety of the Pacific Northwest, has an above normal chance for significant wildfires this summer, according to the latest forecast issued by the National Interagency Fire Center.
Persistent drought conditions and above-average temperatures are expected across much of the U.S. through October, according to the report issued July 1. As of late June, nearly a third of the country was in a drought.
“Nearly all areas in the region are abnormally dry or in drought status,” reads the Pacific Northwest section of the report.
For all three summer months, the entirety of Oregon and Washington are colored in bright red on the latest forecast maps, indicating the higher likelihood for significant wildfires.
