Northwest Activity Summary
Conditions continued to be warm, dry and smoky across most of the region yesterday with the exception of eastern Oregon, where cooler, moister conditions prevailed. Thunderstorms moved across southeast Oregon, bringing scattered lightning and traces of precipitation. Moderate winds contributed to growth on existing large fires in northern Washington and central Oregon. Initial attack was light across the region with a focus in northeast Oregon where previous lightning occurred.

Northwest Fire Weather Summary
The upper level low that has been loitering over the region for the last few days will move off to the east this afternoon/evening, taking the thunderstorm threat with it. A stronger trough will move across the area Thursday clearing smoke and bringing cooler temperatures and moisture along with gusty westerly winds. Little rain is expected with this system, but a frontal system is poised to cross the region late Sunday into early next week, which may bring some wetting rains, particularly to northwest Washington. Check the latest NWS fire weather planning forecasts for details for your area.
Northwest Fire Potential Summary
Fire danger remains above average, but trends downward through the week as cool, moist air moves onto the scene. By early next week, we should see the risk of new significant fires across the region at or below historic normal level for the end of August. Gusty westerly winds through mountain gaps on Thursday could challenge efforts on initial attack as well as existing incidents in wind prone areas.
