Paradise Fire Update - Tuesday, August 11, 2015
The Washington DNR Type 2 helicopter worked all day yesterday dropping buckets of water on the two spot fires on the western bank of Bob Creek. The spots are in an extremely steep section of the creek making them inaccessible to firefighters. An infrared flight late last night showed no heat in the spot fires. The sprinkler system is successfully installed and operational. Crew members began assessing the area to the northwest of the fire for future needs in case the fire were to advance.
The helicopter will continue bucket drops on the spot fires today. Crew members will work to improve the sprinkler system and fill in gaps to insure continuous moisture is disbursed. Scouting of the area to the northwest of the fire perimeter will continue.
Incident Commanders met with cooperating agencies today to enhance communications and discuss the long-term management of the Paradise Fire. Representatives from the National Park Service, Washington State Department of Natural Resources and the United States Forest Service were present. The Paradise Fire will continue to burn until a season ending event of rain or snow occurs.
Fire activity has picked up around the Northwest and California. There were 183 new fires around the nation yesterday, 58 of them were in the Northwest. Fire resources are allocated based on the national fire activity levels and priority of the specific fire. The Paradise Fire is no longer on the national priority list, due to higher priority incidents that are a more immediate threat to lives and property. The national situation report is updated daily with the priority fires and their statistics, https://www.nifc.gov/nicc/sitreprt.pdf.
Fires are not permitted in the backcountry area of Olympic National Park, including coastal areas. Campfires are only allowed in established front-country campgrounds in metal campfire rings.
