After last night’s weather, crews were ordered to ‘stand down’ this morning while managers evaluate safety of access roads and work areas. Winds were recorded over 50mph; these winds along with an inch or more of rain means trees and snags are unstable. Crews assigned with Division Y will stage on the Chetco Road out of Brookings until managers have assessed the road to the south of the fire. Crews at the Agness Helibase are also holding off work activity this morning for the same reasons. Severe weather alerts from the National Weather Service are warning of high winds until 2 pm today. Travel conditions may be hazardous for crews and heavy equipment. The potential for falling snags and trees is very high. Along with wind, moderate to heavy rain is expected which may help to slow the spread and growth of the fire. Yesterday, crews pulled hoses and pumps from portions of secure line along the western perimeter and returned the hoses to the fire camp. Engines patrolled the northern perimeter, locating and extinguishing smokes that were within 50 feet of the fire line. In order to minimize fuel loads, chipping of woody debris was completed on the contingency line along Forest Road 3680 that extends north from DP 10 as well as along the section between DP 8 south and west along the contingency line through Snow Camp to the junction with FR 3318. Helicopters were used to hold the fire west of the Craggies as the fire continues to work its way towards the rocky ridges that form a natural barrier to fire. Hand crews patrolled and mopped up within 150 feet along the southern perimeter. The Emergency Area Closure remains in place on the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest. Please see the Facebook page or the Inciweb page listed above for all closure information. The temporary flight restriction over the fire area also remains in place. With the weekend coming fire fighters would like to remind the public to watch out for fire equipment working in the area. Bow hunting season opens this weekend. Hunters and outdoor enthusiasts should use caution while recreating on private and public lands. Extreme drought conditions exist in southwest Oregon creating very receptive fuels. Any spark or flame may ignite a wildfire, so please follow local fire restrictions and remain mindful of fire prevention. |
