Cause: Lightning, July 14, 2014
Location: Boulder Creek drainage, northeast of Stehekin and west of Butte Creek, in the Stephen
Mather Wilderness
Jurisdiction: North Cascades National Park Complex, National Park Service
Size: 1705 acres
Command: N. Rockies Wildland Fire Management Team, John Thompson, Incident Commander
Strategy: Point protection and modified suppression

Firefighters used aviation resources to their advantage yesterday and employed bucket drops from the medium helicopter to aid in cooling hot spots in the Butte Creek portion of the fire.  They constructed direct line where feasible, using light on the land techniques.  Winds on the fire remained light and fire behavior remained quiet, limited to individual tree torching.  Additionally, a small water pump and lightweight hose was delivered by helicopter longline near the confluence of Butte and Boulder Creeks.

The North Cascades Smokejumper Base will assist in the delivery of paracargo from a fixed-wing plane today.  The paracargo will consist of provisions to supply the wildland fire modules at Juanita Lake spike camp for three to four days.  In an unusual twist, the new line safety officer, who is a smokejumper, will also arrive on the fire via the twin-engine CASA (C-212).  He will jump first and then, from the ground, assist the plane in executing the cargo drop to Helispot 2.

The long-term plan for managing this fire will be presented to agency administrators and community leaders today.  This plan will identify tools to assist in decision-making and coordination between North Cascades NP, Okanogan-Wenatchee NF, and Chelan County Fire District 10.

All services are available in Stehekin.  Rainbow Falls Trail is open, as is the Lake Shore Trail.  The North Cascades National Park superintendent has closed the Boulder Creek Trail in the Stephen Mather Wilderness. The Forest Supervisor of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest has lifted the area closure in the vicinity of the Lone Mountain 1 Fire on National Forest Lands with the exception of War Creek and Williams Creek trails.
