Northwest Fire Potential Summary
Although the combination of gusty winds and low humidity will bring near critical fire weather conditions to portions of the region through the weekend, the threat for new ignitions and potential for significant large fires will hold in normal to low-end elevated categories.
High pressure will bring sunny skies, near normal temperatures and continued low humidity today and Saturday. Gusty northwest winds to 30 mph, along with low humidity will allow for another day of increased fire behavior today over eastern Oregon; elsewhere lighter wind speeds will prevail. Winds will generally be light on Saturday, with the exception of moderate East winds developing along the western Columbia River Gorge.
Temperatures will warm Sunday as winds increase out of the south to southwest ahead of an approaching cold front. The strongest winds will occur across southern Oregon, accompanied by humidity values in the teens. The cold front will bring a dip in temperatures, along with rain, possibly heavy at times, to areas along and west of the Cascades Sunday afternoon, spreading inland overnight. The widespread rain will lose its intensity while traversing over the mountains, diminishing to scattered showers, with significantly lower rainfall amounts, for areas east of the Cascades Monday and Tuesday.
