The
Crescent Fire exhibited more activity than the National Fire on Thursday. A
change in the weather flow to a cooler and moister maritime pattern should
retard fire behavior over the next few days.
Firefighters will take advantage of these more benign conditions by
extending fire lines and strengthening existing road systems. Diane Hutton’s Northern Rockies Wildland Fire
Management Team took over command of the fire at 9:00 pm on Thursday. On Friday crews will work to build hand-line
around the northeast corner of Crescent Fire, this is an important point to
control to prevent the fire from burning farther east into Crater Lake National
Park. The north side of the Crescent
Fire is now sealed with a direct hand- line and firefighters will work to tie
this line to the west to Highway 230 anchoring the fire on the north. Forest Service roads around the National Fire
are being widened and improved to ease access and to potentially act as
fire-lines. The difficult topography to the south of the fires is being scouted
for opportunities to engage the fire. Helicopter
personnel have located water sources to minimize turn-around time for bucket
drops that will support ground personnel.
The Run Around the Rim Marathon is scheduled for Saturday, August 8th
at Crater Lake National Park and weather conditions should minimize smoke
concerns.
This page is designed to provide for timely and official fire information about wildland fires across the Pacific Northwest. The information is posted by the Northwest Interagency Coordination Center in partnership with Public Information Officers that work for federal, state and local fire agencies and is drawn from official sources within the wildland fire community.
