Paradise Fire Update - Monday, August 10, 2015

08-09-15.jpg
Fire officials were able to fly the Paradise Fire yesterday and observed considerably less smoke than the previous flight on friday. Two smokes were found on the western bank of Bob Creek in an extremely steep section of the creek. Bucket drops were utilized on the spot fires since they are located in inaccessible terrain. Bob Creek was established early in the fire plan as a natural landmark and possible barrier. Crews made great progress on the sprinkler system yesterday and hope to have it fully operational by mid-shift today.

The forecasted weather shows a warming and drying trend starting today. We expect fire activity to increase with the change in weather and smoke may impact the peninsula again. The helicopter will continue bucket drops throughout the day on the western bank of Bob Creek. The intent of the sprinkler system will be wetting the vegetation west of the fire throughout the afternoon. The sprinklers are being installed in an area that forms a natural break closest to the western edge of the fire, where the vegetation and terrain allow accessibility for ground crews. In addition, crew members will be assessing the area to the northwest of the fire for future needs in case the fire were to advance.

Fires are not permitted in the backcountry area of Olympic National Park, including coastal areas.  Campfires are only allowed in established front-country campgrounds in metal campfire rings.
