Evacuations due to Halfway Fire

Naches, WA—The 99-acre Halfway Fire is burning in heavy stands of timber along the Naches River, approximately 25 miles west of Yakima.  Due to the fire’s close proximity, Halfway Flat and Sawmill Flat Campgrounds were evacuated on Sunday.  As the fire spread down canyon, additional precautionary evacuations occurred at Camp Roganunda Christian Camp/retreat and conference center and 25 homes in the Crag and Stillwater summer home tracts.

Boulder Cave, Boulder Cave Trail, and Road No. 1704 are closed to public access due to the fire.  State Route 410 remains open but travelers are advised to drive cautiously due to firefighting equipment and resources in the area.

Approximately 70 interagency Forest Service, Department of Natural Resources and rural county fire district personnel are assigned to the fire, including two 20 person crews, three fire engines and overhead personnel.  Additional crews and engines will be arriving later today.  Air tankers and a helicopter are available to provide aerial assistance as needed.

No structures have burned and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
Travelers are cautioned that smoke may be visible in the immediate vicinity of the fire.
