Horseshoe
Fire Update –

AM
Columbia Cascade Type 3 Incident
Management Team is managing the Horseshoe Fire which is located on the Mt.
Adams Ranger District in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Doug Currie is the incident commander. The
fire is within the Mt. Adams Wilderness Area and was spotted on July 3, 2015.
The fire is located on the west side
of Mt. Adams in subalpine fir timber along Riley Camp Trail #64 at approximately
5300 foot elevation. The southeastern
portion of the fire is pushing up against the 2012 Cascade Crest fire.
During initial attack on July 3,
2015, a helicopter worked to check the spread of the fire with bucket drops
while a local ground crew sized up the fire and evaluated containment line
location. Firefighters and district
recreation personnel walked the affected trails and escorted forest visitors
out of the area. Four additional crews
arrived yesterday to assist on the fire.
Firefighters expect the Horseshoe
fire to be a long duration fire given the remote location, fuel type and the
extensive time left in the fire season. Given these conditions and the size of
the fire, a type 2 incident management team has been ordered to take over the
management of the fire. Washington Interagency Incident Management Team 4, with
Brian Gale as the incident commander, is scheduled to arrive today and will
take command of the fire at 6am on July 6, 2015.

The lack of escape routes and safety
zones is dictating that firefighters use indirect tactics. Selected firelines that were developed during
the 2012 Cascade Creek fire are being evaluated for use.
